Ancient Bolgar Included in UNESCO World Heritage List
The relevant decision has been adopted at regular meeting of the 38-th session of UNESCO World Heritage Committee held in Qatar.
The historical and archeological complex of Bolgar has become the 1002-nd site included in the World Heritage List and the first Russian cultural site included in the List since 2005.
The ancient Bolgar is the world's northernmost medieval monument of Islamic architecture, unique and the only sample of Bulgarian-Tatar architecture of the middle XIII-XIV centuries.
The historical monument has no similar ones in the world - it testifies to the missing states (Volga Bulgaria, the Golden Horde), it is the site of the official adoption of Islam by Volga Bulgars - the ancestors of Kazan Tatars – as well, in the year 922.
