Maslenitsa will be widely celebrated – at Ethnomir

27 December, 2013

In ancient times the celebartion of Maslenitsa (Pancake Day) was timed to coincide with the spring equinox, then with Christianity adoption in Russia the holiday has become the last chance to feast before the Lent.

Maslenitsa has a lot of merry customs: to visit relatives for eating pancakes, burn huge doll of Maslenitsa, decorate homes with birch rods, intertwined with bows and ribbons.
All that will be offered by Maslenitsa to its guests at ethnographic park Ethnomir in Kaluga region, along with concerts and plays, games and contests, fair, kalatch (kind of fancy loaf) and spice cakes.

Those who would manage with difficult challenges will receive prizes and gifts. Needlewomen will try to make toys and charms with their hands or attend a cooking class where they will learn to cook pancakes from any meal – whethet it would be oatmeal or buckwheat.

Maslenitsa is a family holiday. In Ethnomir elder generation and young ones, both, will find occupation they would like. For the youngest guests playground will be opened in the houses of Egypt and Finland, too.

The ethnographic park Ethnomir is located 90 km from Moscow, near the town of Borovsk in Kaluga region. Here at one site, traditional dwellings of various nations of the world are brought together – from the Nepalese houses to the yurt of Siberian nomads, several museums are open, each day there are entertainment programmes, excursions and master-classes.
Also there are restaurants, souvenir shops, a climbing wall and a kennel of Huskies at the place.
