The Heroes of World War I Commemorated in Kaliningrad

30 May, 2014

The monument with three figures – officer nobleman, peasant and middle-class man – was opened in the center of Kaliningrad.

The opening ceremony was attended by the Minister of culture of Russian Federation Vladimir Medinsky and the governor of Kaliningrad region Nikolay Tsukanov.

The author of the monument is sculptor Salavat Shcherbakov.

According to Vladimir Medinsky, the monument in Kaliningrad has become the first one in Russia dedicated to that terrible war.

Kaliningrad region and the city of Kaliningrad – formerly known as Koenigsberg – is the only place in Russia where hard and prolonged battles of 1914–1918 were fought. Almost two thousand fraternal military graves remind today about the battles.

"Another grand monument dedicated to the memory of the heroes of World War I would appear at Poklonnaya Hill in Moscow. Monuments and commemorative plaques will be opened in Pskov – the place where the front headquarters and military hospitals were located. In Lipetsk, Arkhangelsk, Voronezh, Volgograd and other cities they will open, too, where military schools, collecting points for troops to go to the front were situated" – said the Minister of culture.

The monument, weighing 8 tons, is built thanks to private donations. The inscription on the monument reads "Grateful Russia to the heroes of World War I".
