The City Day – the Day of St. Petersburg foundation
The date of Saint Petersburg birth is considered to be the day when Peter the Great has laid the foundation of Peter and Paul Fortress at Hare Island in the mouth of Neva River in 1703.
The City Day is celebrated by both city residents and its visitors. A large number of tourists is attracted by the opportunity to become participants of traditional festivities in the time of white nights.
At the City Day processions and parades, fairs and concerts featuring popular artists are held, the representatives of municipal authorities take floor. Often in time adjusted to coincide with the City Day new monuments are opened as well as various facilities after completion of their construction or repair.
After sunset one may hear reverberations of celebration fireworks.
